Víctor, a 17-year-old wheelbarrow leader, dreams of becoming famous, often absorbed by the TV in the appliance store in the Municipal Market.

He receives an unusual proposal, to carry seven boxes of unknown content, in exchange for a torn half of a $100 bill. He will get the other half when he finishes the job. Víctor, who has never seen this much money, has no idea how much it really is. But he also knows well that his need is greater than his curiosity.

With a borrowed cell phone the contractor uses to tell him the way, Víctor embarks on the journey. Crossing the eight blocks of the market seemed easy but things get complicated along the way. There is something in those boxes that starts a high-speed wheelbarrow chase in the secret and gloomy corridors of the market. Without even realizing, Víctor and his pursuers will get involved in a crime of which they know nothing.

On a hot summer day in a vacant Madrid during a period of social and political transition in Spain, Miguel (José Sacristán), a feared and respected journalist, sets up a meeting with Ángela (María Valverde), a young journalism student, in a friend's studio. His intentions are clearly sexual; hers are less clear.  Chance events force them together for more time than they would have chosen: locked in a bathroom, naked, without the possibility of escape.

Removed from the outside world, the pair, who represent polarized generations, are pitted in an uneven duel involving age, intellect,  ambition and experience. The political and social context of the period provides the background to the power shifts that continually take place between them over twenty-four hours.

Su and Chris are two strangers whose lives have been struck by tragedy — Su has been diagnosed with lung cancer just days before her wedding and Chris’ longtime girlfriend has fallen into a mysterious coma.  When they both learn of a bizarre Thai ritual in which a living person lies in a coffin to reverse bad Karma, they both decide to partake in a mass funeral for the living.  Soon, their lives have turned around — Su’s cancer vanishes and Chris’ girlfriend awakes from her coma — but the good fortune is short-lived.  A series of terrifying paranormal events suggests that Su and Chris may have upset the Karmic balance of the universe by cleansing themselves of bad luck, and the people closest to them may ultimately pay the price.

International stars Karen Mok and Ananda Everingham star in this brooding tale about the fear of death and the cost of love.   Based on a real-life ritual and shot on location in Bangkok, ancient Thai spiritual grounds, and an active crematorium, The Coffin is a nightmarish and ultimately moving supernatural thrill ride.
